Prior to opening her company in 1999, Bernie had 20 years of hands on experience in HR, culminating as the Senior Executive of Human Resources for One Valley Bank and Bancorp (now BB&T).

With top notch corporate experience as well as first hand business experience, Bernie Deem is a well-known figure in the HR community.  DeemHR provides HR support on a part-time, interim, or retainer basis for nearly 100 companies in the state and nearby regions as diverse as Charleston Newspapers  to Aker-Kvaerner.

She is a frequently requested guest speaker and has presented for numerous state and regional seminars and conferences. She is most notably known for her charismatic, high energy, and sometimes unusual presentation style which has defined her as one of the best HR mentors in the state.  Ms. Deem is a published author of several articles including “Positive Criticism”, “Ten Simple Rules for Dealing with a Marginal Performer”, “Auditing HR” and “The Graceful Exit” which was designed to reduce the risk of a lawsuit.  She also wrote the “Federal and State of West Virginia Checklists for Laws and Regulations” published in 1993.

Bernie has a degree in Language Arts from WVU and has continued her interest in the effect of linguistics in the workplace.  This combined with her academic interest in the study of brain research, as well as type and temperament, have led her to develop several innovative, and effective processes for handling difficult situations, including her custom-designed “Bring More to the Table just by Being Who You Are”,  She has been the recipient of the “Excellence in Human Resources Award” presented by the Charleston Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management and has also served as membership chairman for the State Council.   Bernie has also worked as an expert witness for both defendants and plaintiffs and case evaluator for several attorneys.
